The Bachelor of Science Honours in Biosystems Engineering is a four-year undergraduate degree program offered by the Department of Biosystems and Biotechnology. It is a multidisciplinary degree program that integrates engineering principles with biological sciences to develop innovative solutions for sustainable food production, environmental management, water resources, renewable energy, and bioprocess industries. The discipline contributes to addressing key global challenges, such as food security, climate change, and clean water. The Biosystems Engineering curriculum offers three specialization pathways: Food and Bioprocess Systems, Agricultural Systems, and Environmental Systems, enabling graduates to develop expertise in sectors that are critical to industrial development, agricultural modernization, and environmental sustainability in Sri Lanka as well as the world.
Three (3) simple passes (S) including two subjects of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Higher Mathematics or Combined Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Science for Technology, Bio Systems Technology, Engineering Technology, Agro Technology, Bio-Resource Technology and any other subject in one and the same sitting at the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination conducted by the Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka or equivalent qualification.
Biosystems Engineers contribute in roles such as process and production engineers, quality assurance executives, sustainability officers, research and development executives, project managers, and consultants, applying engineering principles to solve challenges related to biological systems, resources, and sustainable technologies.
Our graduates are currently pursuing diverse and rewarding careers across a wide range of industries, including food manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, sustainability, environmental management, quality assurance and certification services. Many graduates also continue into higher education, academic research, and specialized professional pathways both locally and internationally.
