Environmental Technology

The BTec in Environmental Technology programme aims at preparing graduates to be on the frontline of protecting our environment. The programme is designed as a combined study of the Science, Technology, and Engineering disciplines. Students will gain an in-depth, firm scientific foundation on biological, chemical, and physical mechanisms of the environmental challenges and their monitoring, using scientific and technological interventions for their assessment and management whilst complying with various laws, regulations, and policies.

Our programme equips students to actively engage in addressing pressing environmental and sustainability challenges. Through continuous monitoring and assessment of real-world issues, students will develop the ability to critically analyse complex environmental problems and propose innovative, practical solutions. Working alongside scientists, engineers, and industry experts, they will gain hands-on experience and collaborative skills essential for success in the field. Designed to meet the demands of an ever-changing world shaped by rapid urbanization, population growth, and ecological degradation, this programme cultivates adaptable and forward-thinking environmental technologists. Its broad, multidisciplinary foundation also ensures graduates are well-prepared for lifelong learning and diverse career paths.

Curriculum of this program not only focuses on scientific and technological solutions to environmental challenges but also highlights the critical roles of social sciences, humanities, policy, and governance in effective problem-solving. Students will gain hands-on experience in research and innovation, working alongside expert faculty and mentors. The programme also develops essential professional skills including leadership, entrepreneurship, technical writing, communication, and project management – empowering graduates to thrive in diverse careers.

To bridge academic learning with industry practice, students will have the exclusive opportunity to complete an internship at a renowned organization in the industry, preparing them to become future – ready environmental professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

General intake

Three (3) simple passes (‘S’) or higher including two subjects of the following;
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Higher Mathematics or Combined Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Science for Technology, Bio Systems Technology, Engineering Technology, Agro Technology, Bio-Resource Technology and any other subject in one and the same sitting at the GCE (Advanced Level) Examination conducted by the Department of Examinations of Sri Lanka or equivalent qualification.

PROGRAMME CURRICULUM

The BTEC (Hons) in Environmental Technology at SLTC is a four-year interdisciplinary degree program designed to equip students with a strong foundation in science, technology, and environmental management. Covering a wide range of subjects including environmental microbiology, pollution control, climate adaptation, GIS and remote sensing, renewable energy systems, and sustainable development, the curriculum combines theory with practical applications through labs, fieldwork, and industry-based projects. In addition to the below-listed modules, students follow the Winning Edge Undergraduate Skill Development Programme, a structured English communication training offered in four levels—Bronze to Platinum—which is a mandatory requirement for graduation. This ensures that graduates are not only technically competent but also confident communicators, ready to take on diverse careers in the growing field of environmental technology.

Payment and Refund Policy

1 . Refunds – Registration Fee/ Down Payment/ Semester Payments

1.1. Students are refunded their registration fee/Down Payment in the following circumstances and all the refunds are facilitated only within a year.

a. Three (3) simple passes (‘S’) in approved subjects in physical science, biological science or technology subject stream in one and the same sitting at the GCE (Advaned Level) Examination or equivalent.

b. If a paid student is selected to follow the degree under the MOHE loan scheme within the first semester

c. A qualified Doctor’s recommendation is given to the student, that the student is unable to participate in academic activities due to mental or physical conditions.

1.2. University Semester fees are refunded only when a student fails the GCE Advanced Level examination. In all other cases, students must pay the semester fee.

1.3. If a student gets selected to MOHE after the 1st Semester completion, the university will not refund the paid amount but will allow them to continue the degree as MOHE students.

2 . Invoicing

2.1. Invoices are raised based on the time of registration, prevailing discount schemes, and timing of the payment scheme selected by the student. Further, all invoices must be settled within the specified period mentioned on the invoice.

3 . Penalties

3.1. Management may charge penalty charges based on the late payment dates and the penalty rates will be changed based on the discretion of the management.
