MSc in Embedded Systems and IC Design - LJMU, UK
This programme has been designed to cover the advanced
concepts of building embedded systems using high-end
microchips, designing ICs with custom embedded system designs, and testing the built systems with industry-standard tools. Whilst the focus on the IC design concepts makes this programme unique for Sri Lanka, SLTC’s in-house experts in nanoelectronics deliver advanced knowledge on state-of-the-art CMOS devices
and systems, fabrication, and testing of microelectronic devices and in the latest consumer electronic products. The programme is also associated with the national research lab for embedded systems in Madurai.
Conducted virtually by a faculty comprising distinguished
academic members representing both institutes, the programmes cover current, and a wide range of content delivered via tutorials, seminars, activity-based learning, group discussions, panel sessions
and inverted classroom learning.

Alternative Exit: Postgraduate Diploma in Wireless Communications
- Year 1
Embedded Systems (20 credits)
This module aims to provide theoretical and practical skills in the
design and development of advanced embedded systems.IC System Design (20 credits)
This module gives students advanced knowledge of the design and
test techniques required for modern digital IC systems. Extensive
practical designs are carried out with the help of modern ECAD
software and hardware development boards.Nano Devices, Fabrication and Testing (20 credits)
This module enhances knowledge in state-of-the-art CMOS devices and systems, fabrication and testing of microelectronic
devices and in the latest consumer electronic products.Digital Design & Test (10 credits)
This module gives the student an advanced knowledge of the design and test techniques required for modern digital electronic integrated circuits at the transistor, register and silicon levels.
Practical design is carried out with the help of modern ECAD software.Advanced Signal Processing (20 credits)
This module aims to develop an advanced understanding of techniques and practical experience in industry-oriented applications of digital signal processing.Research Skills (10 credits)
This module prepares students to undertake their own research projects and deliver the required skillset for the successful
completion of their investigations.
It provides the skills required to formulate a project plan, design experiments, mitigate against uncertainties and deliver a comprehensive description of results.Modelling and Simulation (10 credits)
This module is designed to introduce coding for scientific computation and system simulation. The module will enable
students to use a traditional high-level programming language to create virtual Instruments (VI’s) and interface them with compatible hardware for data acquisition (DAQ) and control applications.Professional and Leadership Skills (10 credits)
This module provides a valuable opportunity for engineering graduates to acquire the necessary skills and training to work at the postgraduate level, and to develop the important emotional competency skills needed to excel in their professional activities.MSc Dissertation (60 credits)
The main aims of the project module are to demonstrate the student’s ability to conduct their own thorough investigation,
undertake high-quality academic research and demonstrate critical evaluation of their results. This is a very important module representing 600 hours of self-driven scholarly activity. When
considering a project, it would be appropriate to choose a subject
area strongly associated with one of the taught modules.
